How to play

Each America/New_York calendar day unlocks one mystery state. You get progressive clues (region, neighbors, capital cues, and more) and up to six typed guesses. Wrong guesses gray out on the map. After you finish, a short bonus round drills capital, neighbors, and flag recognition for that same state.

Why daily state practice sticks

Spaced, once-a-day drills beat binge quizzes for long-term map memory. The clue ladder forces you to reason from coarse geography (coast, region, size) down to fine facts (capital traps, border rings) instead of memorizing a single screenshot.

Streaks count only your first finish of the day. Later attempts are practice so you can study without inflating the score you share.

Connect the quiz to real Places data

When you learn a state here, open its US5 state hub for population, cost, and salary context — the same Places layer that powers ZIP and county pages. Games teach recognition; Places pages answer “what is it like to live there?”

Frequently asked questions

When does the daily puzzle reset?
At midnight America/New_York. The seed is deterministic for that calendar day so everyone shares the same puzzle.
Do abbreviations count as guesses?
Yes. Postal codes and common aliases resolve to the official state name (for example CA → California).
Is this official government data?
No. Games are educational practice tools. For decision data — cost of living, salary, ZIP demographics — use US5 Places, Cost, and Money pages, which cite Census / HUD-style sources.
