How this list is built

Sources: CDFI Fund designated Qualified Opportunity Zone tracts, joined through the HUD ZIP–tract residential crosswalk onto US5 ZIP master records. State pages list indexable ZIPs flagged as overlapping QOZ geography, ordered by population.

Tract boundaries and ZIP boundaries do not align perfectly. Treat this as a browse aid, not a legal determination of zone status for a specific address. Primary references remain IRS and CDFI publications; see also Methodology.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Qualified Opportunity Zone?
Qualified Opportunity Zones (QOZs) are census tracts designated under U.S. tax law to encourage long-term investment in designated communities. Designation is tract-based; US5 surfaces ZIPs that intersect those tracts.
How does a ZIP get marked as an Opportunity Zone on US5?
We start from the CDFI Fund list of designated QOZ tracts, then use the HUD ZIP–tract crosswalk to map tracts onto ZIP codes. A ZIP is treated as an OZ ZIP when it overlaps designated tracts (with a tract coverage share where available).
Does this mean the whole ZIP is an Opportunity Zone?
Not necessarily. Opportunity Zones are defined for census tracts. A ZIP can contain both QOZ and non-QOZ tracts. Use the ZIP profile and official IRS / CDFI materials for investment or tax decisions.
Is this investment or tax advice?
No. This hub is a geographic browse layer that joins public designations to published ZIP demographics. Consult qualified advisors and primary IRS / CDFI sources before making financial decisions.
